How can we make information meaningful to humans? Information is the core of our modern society and making sense of it is a challenge for companies, media platforms and governments. In a world where fake news are used as political weapons, cryptocurrencies are threatening traditional finances and bizarre characters are becoming heads of state, our role as designers becomes critical.
More data was created in 2017 than the previous 5000 years of humanity
As designers who question the world and the future, we naturally aim to look out for an improvement of the main aspects of this society we live in. We believe in the possibility of, through Design, making this world a better one.
Only 0.5% of world’s data is being analysed for operational decision making
More information is not equal to more understanding. Today we live surrounded by an infinite flow of mediated information. It is our responsibility to create comprehensible and meaningful systems capable of communicate the suitable contents in an adequate way using the right tools for the job.
Data tends to de-attach the emotions behind what they represent
Designers can connect people, cultures, communities and private or public institutions and organizations helping them communicate with their audiences in better ways.
The MADD will give you the necessary skill set to create these connections. It will provide you with the knowledge and resources necessary to solve any information design problem with a critical perspective over our information society and the challenges it faces.
Methodology You will be part of a committed and driven group of designers, researchers, thinkers and storytellers in a hands-on and collaborative learning experience. You will be able to develop your interests while working on projects that are based in real life challenges and using the city of Barcelona as a lab.
Different disciplines, from data science to sociology, communication strategy, cartography and audiovisual methods of research and communication, will be part of an a-disciplinary challenge approached from a critical standpoint with design excellence in mind.
Together we will explore questions like… — How can data influence our perception of reality? — How can we analyse and work with data in a productive way? — How flexible is data and in how many ways can we represent it? — How can data and design help communities to shed some light upon and improve their realities?
We know we know that designers, in 99% of the situations, end up working in teams. Big or small, multidisciplinary or not, teams are the core of our practice and a good designer needs to know how to behave and relate to his colleagues, clients or providers. For this reason, teamwork will be strengthened throughout the year.
Practice oriented Through a constant and intense practical approach, even on those lessons that may seem purely theoretical, lecturers will give you the tools and instructions in order not only to learn, but also and most of all to understand how and when to put into practice the acquired skills.
How can we be good designers without questioning about the world we live in? We strongly believe in the value of being critical, not in a destructive way but always trying to find the whys behind the certainties and being obsessed with the constant research of a way to do it better.
We understand design as a transversal discipline able to affect and influence very different realities and contexts. Design is not only a way of doing things, but also a way of thinking that opens to infinite possibilities. This approach will drive your experience in this Masters; you will see very different forms and ways of design, understanding its adaptability and its power to change things.

The MADD is a modular learning experience based in two Master Projects. The modules have nine different formats:
1Foundations Three modules, (Statistics, Cartography and Schematics) will give common ground and a shared perspective over the Information Design field.
— Statistics Data analysis is the first step of our work. Extracting meaning from the cold facts, recognizing patterns, reaching informed conclusions and representing it all on the most suitable way is essential in an open, yet rigorous, approach to data.
— Cartography Maps are the foundation of many Information Design projects, both as a complementary source and as a tool for better understanding. We’ll learn about the use of cartography and its cultural significance and we will begin to familiarize ourselves with the basic concepts of mapmaking.
— Schematics How do we explain relationships between things? The representation of taxonomies, the graphic synthesis of multiple aspects of one problem are fundamental part of Information design. This class provides an introduction to the representation of complex phenomena, systems and networks, from the simple presentation of time to the visualization of the complex communities that are shaped by social networks.
This master's degree is built around two projects. Taking up a whole semester, they will provide the opportunity to bring your ideas to reality, to put what you’re learning during the course in practice and to use the city of Barcelona as a playground and a lab.
— Data Visualization You will work hand in hand with your classmates building a data visualization project from scratch. This means researching, defining the right questions to gather the data you need, continue with the analysis of the information and ending up designing the perfect way to visualize your conclusions.
— Information SystemsCities are worlds; complex infosystems that we share with other beings and things. In this project we will work closely with the City of Barcelona, using the urban environment as a subject and creating graphic tools that will help solving some of the main challenges it faces.
3Quarterly ProjectsInformation Design is like a Russian doll; inside every problem there are smaller autonomous problems. We will work out some of them with the help of experts, on tutorized projects dealing with specific subjects.
— Other ways of Storytelling We’re all creating and consuming STORIES, aren’t we? Images rule the nation, the revolution will definitely be Instagramized. But we don’t care, well, we do care. We still believe in stories as something more relevant than entertainment. Get ready to tell stories, produce images, design, create installations, whatever. We’ll challenge you to put your inner and other’s self in front of the mirror. Our dear students will have to lie to tell the truth and walk further to start a change.
— Participation Systems / Visualizing in Social Networks Social media is an atmosphere, an enormous fluid layer that surrounds us and of which we are all an active part. These new forms of relationship and participation need new tools to be represented and understood.
— Symbolic Alphabet / Iconography We need language to communicate. Thus, we need alphabets too. We will create coherent symbolic systems that are the foundation of many information design projects.
— Visual ExplanationInfographics at its best. The power of good design can make complex issues understandable despite differences of language and culture or format constraints.
4Perspectives We will look at Information Design through a critical lens. Things don’t happen just because; the information we live surrounded by has been mediated and handpicked, it has its context and its purpose. It can be read in many ways and affect us in many others. Sociology, philosophy and cultural analysis will help us shed some inquisitive light over a world shaped by information.
— Media Studies Our planet has changed, and so did we. Underground, connected technologies wrap our planet with optic fibre wires, while over our heads satellites are orbiting in the atmosphere. In between, humans, bacteria, infrastructure, markets and climate phenomena are entangled in new ways. What does it mean to be human in a context where we increasingly rely on the technologies we’ve created? How do connected systems articulate culture, politics, economics and the environment?
— Philosophy of Social ResearchThis class provides conceptual tools to deal with the current discussions in social research, with a special focus on the challenges that arise with digital technologies. Thus, at the end of the course, the student should be able to answer far-reaching questions as: can we study human societies ‘scientifically’? What are the differences between quantitative and qualitative methods to explain human behavior? Does Big Data imply a paradigm shift in the way we conceive knowledge?, and so on.
— AudiovisualInformation plus time equals movies. The moving image is a perfect vehicle to communicate the complexities of data. We will review a cultural history of Information Design in motion.
— Data for the Common GoodSmall words for a massive subject. Can we make sense of the amount of data we generate? Is data really intangible? Do algorithms inherit our biases? We will dive deep in one of the realities of our time.
— Critical ThinkingHow can we be good designers without questioning about the world we live in? We strongly believe in the great value of being critical, not in a destructive way but always trying to find the whys behind the certainties and being obsessed with the constant research of a way to do it better.
— StorytellingBuilding compelling pieces seems to be the key to create empathy and action; both when handling real life information and in the world of fiction, storytelling techniques help projects to have message consistency.
— Data (hi)stories In order to tell stories with data, we will learn how people read visualizations: what works, what doesn’t, and why. Our two main sources of answers to these questions will be perceptual cognitive theory (how we interpret what we see) and the very own history of data visualization (which has shaped current trends and best practices).
5WorkshopsLearning by doing. Intensive and hand-on design experiences on core Information Design issues.
— Data JournalismIn a world of alternative facts and fake news, journalism is one of the battlegrounds of an asymmetric war. We will explore data driven journalism on a crash course in one of the most impactful areas of Information Design.
— Thematic Cartography Maps can be more than geography. We will use them as tools for expression and like the basis for any kind of information: from which fauna inhabits our sewers to which words are the most used in horror movies.
— Who's Afraid of Technology?Technology constitutes an essential topic if our duty is to understand how our contemporary society works. Today, more than ever, technology plays an important role not only improving (or not) our daily lives, but also gathering, analyzing and visualizing almost all kinds of information.
— Guerrilla DataStudents will learn, mainly through creativity and lateral thinking, to solve problems in a non-direct way, applying strategies and practices that you wouldn't take into account if you only behaved in a logical way.
6CapsulesData is everywhere; in how we move and in what we hear. We will explore different fields in which data and information are present and how they configure their surrounding.
— Data & Light
— Data & SoundThe aim of this module is having the opportunity to explore the connection between data and the sound layer, an approach that brings an augmented reality into the meaning of the monitorized data. We will develop a toolkit that will ease the way we relate with information technologies through new coming techniques know as data sonification, which have been around for a while but are increasing its importance in many digital and physical spaces.
— Data & IllustrationDrawing is describing. We can use drawing to illustrate change, the passing of time, the stress over one point. In these lessons we will explore the most direct tool of graphic expression to visualize everyday life data.
— Data & PerformanceTo erase boundaries between disciplines is one of the basis of the MADD. Our voice, our bodies are tools and the space we inhabit is our medium in this bold approach to data visualization.
7ToolsThese will be lessons focused on introducing modules to a variety of software aids for the information designer, from mapmaking to survey tools. They will be single-subject sessions throughout the course to get to know a scope of essential resources for our work.
8Showcases & Case StudiesLearning by example. An opportunity to learn from peeking to the backstage of renowned professionals that will analyse and discuss their works with us. Here’s how Information Design is done.
9International LecturesA series of lectures by internationally acclaimed speakers will be programmed during the course. These lectures will give students the opportunity to hear a first-hand account of experiences and case studies of excellence in different fields of information design.

You will join an inspiring hackathon trip* of 4 days to a European city where you will have the possibility to work day and night hand in hand with your workmates and your professors, developing a real project and putting into practice what you have been learning during the previous months.*Not included in the tuition fee

Barcelona is an astonishing place to live and work, a melting pot of creative people, different cultures and ideas. It is open and it understands design. Barcelona will be your playground, the place in where to research, create, develop and design.
Work on real projects creating real impact among communities
Design is an applied discipline. One of the main goals of the MADD is to work through an actions learning approach mainly based on simulations inspired by real projects. This will allow you to understand the real tricks and possibilities of the discipline and to apply, from day one, everything you learn to your work.

Barcelona is well-known for its passion for design. It's a city with a broad diversity of nuances in gastronomy, cultures and events, which complements perfectly with the masters. It will inspire you and make your journey a complete experience.

teaches Media Studies in the MADD
Andreu researches the intersections bewteen sociology of design and technology, storytelling, social innovation and collaborative practices. Currently is associate professor in UOC (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) and IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) and works as a consultant for public administrations and private companies among which is Domestic Data Streamers.
In the field of art and culture he has collaborated with CCCB, AECID, UNESCO, The Wrong Biennale, Sónar +D or Medialab Prado, among others. He also has been resident researcher on interface politics in Hangar. He has wrote about culture and technology in different media and his work has been published in books like Crossmedia Innovations (Peter Lang) or Fanáticos (UOC Press). He is co-founder of Becoming, a collective space for the observation of emergent sociotechnical realities.

With a background in Psychology, Axel is in charge of the data research department at Domestic Data Streamers, overseeing the application and methodology of the social sciences within the installations. He specialises in transforming behaviours using data in order to understand, foresee and modify them.
Axel has developed his psychological approach to work by working with multidisciplinary teams in different fields including artificial intelligence and natural language to improve e-commerce whilst working for Vi-Cone Corp. He has also developed talent for larger companies such as Sodexo and even headhunting directors positions for Randstad.
On the other hand, Axel has investigated and analysed behaviours within organisations alongside the University Ramon Llull in Barcelona within an interdisciplinary approach to the application of video games as a development of talent. As well as working for Domestic Data Streamers, Axel worked with the elBulli Foundation along with Elisava School of Design and Engineering developing tools applied to analysis and development of creative processes.

Matteo Moretti works as researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bolzano where he co-founded the Visual Journalism research platform and the Visual Journalism Summer school, the first in Italy. Presently he is a Ph.D. candidate at the Inter-Action Department of Computer Science of Trento.
Matteo Moretti researches on visual journalism methods and practices working with transdisciplinary teams, to return the complexity of social phenomena in a more transparent and engaging information to a broader audience. He is a TEDx speaker, World Press Photo Jury member, Visualized.io speaker, awarded with the Data Journalism Award and European Design Award.
is co-director of the MADD where he directs the Information Systems project, he also gives a workshop on Data Visualization in the MGD
He was born in Ferrol, Galicia. He studied Fine Arts in the University of Cuenca. After moving to Barcelona, he settled there as a graphic and multimedia designer. In 2001 he co-founded Cartún, the first online cartoon producer in Spain. Later on, he would join Lamosca, as a graphic designer, art director and partner. Since a few years ago, his work is focused mainly in infographics. He has lectured and taught in various universities, mainly in Spain and Mexico.

Eloi Maduell & Santi Vilanova
Playmodes is an audiovisual research studio. A hybrid team of engineers, musicians and designers, they work with self-made digital technologies that breathe life into original light and sound instruments. This digital luthierism has led them to apply their creativity to immersive installations, scenography or projection mapping, in a journey outside the square boundaries of traditional screens, colonizing space by unfolding pixels across architectural spaces.
Their deep interest in the relationships between visual and auditory phenomena, as well as their skills in electronic music composition, leds Playmodes to create projects where sound and image are treated as a single matter. In most of their projects, the same streams of data generate both audio and visuals through selfmade softwares. Concepts like realtime image sonification, or audio visualization are common on their last works, giving form to visual music artworks which drive the audience into strong synaesthetic perceptions.

BSc in Product Design, MSc in Digital Manufacturing.Pol is a designer whose work is based in Technology, Art and Design. After graduating in Product Design at Elisava School of Design and Engineering, he worked for four years at Telefonica R&D, both in Barcelona and in Madrid, designing new IoT products and also developing and testing ideas for Carrefour, Samsung and Arduino.
He collaborated very closely with the Fundació CIM, a top digital prototype manufacturing centre based in Barcelona, where he studied a MD in Digital Manufacturing, he learned how to produce his designs with a whole new technical vision. Pol is one of the founding partners of Domestic Data Streamers, where he is in charge of the Experience and Design areas. He combines his work at DDS with lecturing about Communication Design at Elisava, and other universities in Barcelona.

Formed in Graphic Design and Typography for the UAB Universtiy in 2004, Aleix Artigal is the founder of Familia, a Barcelona graphic design studio with extensive experience in the fields of corporate identity, icon design, signage, editorial and digital interface design. During this long professional activity, Familia has served national and international clients, both in the public and private sectors, where a long list of collaborations in the cultural field stands out.
Familia develops contemporary and aesthetic design and communication projects, with a clear commitment to functionality. The ultimate goal of Familia is to create projects that add value and give service to particular needs of each client.

Alex is not a proper musician but a sound designer, he uses sound as a way to create an emotional layer on interactive installations. He works with sound coding to generate interaction between sound and the UX, focusing on the sound track as a tool to sonify data experiences. At the moment he works as CTO at DDS in which supervises technology projects and brings in a different approach through sound perspective.

I'm a journalist with experience in various areas (radio, TV, magazines, newspapers, PR, the editorial world and the data world) and with a broad outlook on the job. My main life goal was having a small part (an orc character, if possible) in The Lord Of The Rings, but as that's already difficult, I focus on trying to transmit the real values of journalism and information, and doing it in an empathetic, feminist and conscious way. I like old stuff and music. A lot.

I’ve studed Fine Arts at Barcelona and Paris.
Nowadays my work is focused on drawing and illustration. But I’ve experiment in other fields before and for seven years I did ephemeral and inflatable art installations with an artistic collective in which I was one of the founder members. As an illustrator I've done commissions clients as Seat, FC Barcelona or Ajuntament de Barcelona.
I’ve always tried to combine my career as an illustrator with my personal artwork, more artistic but always focused in drawing, which gave me the opportunity to exhibit in important galleries across Europe and North America. My drawings and paintings are based in a figurative style mixed with more symbolic languages and fantastic compositions or references.

Graduated in Industrial Design Engineering created his first company in 2011: The Social Coin, storifying kindness. He has collaborated with DDS giving support in the creation of interactive systems and experiences. He is working now in R&D at Ymaging, creating systems interpretating complex data in sectors such as smart farms, biomedicine and geophysics. In the meantime he is launching Nanoboost, a Startup related to "Smart Pills" with the objective of enhance brain capabilities.

Graduated in Industrial Engineering (BSc & MSc) at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Throughout his professional career, he has specialized in data science. His work focuses on big data analytics, data processing, visualization, and automation. He is in a relationship with generative art & data generation. Esteban is currently working at Domestic Data Streamers between Research and Tech departments as a data scientist.

Fernando leads the Data Visualization and Analytics Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). He holds a PhD in quantum physics, and his work focuses on scientific data visualization (data heavy graphical interfaces, images, and videos), and data science applied to industrial problems (machine learning and artificial intelligence). He also enjoys doing science dissemination with video data-documentaries and interactive data visualizations.

Computer engineer specialized in digital cartography. His work focuses on the relationships between technology and social transformation through free software and hardware, open data and data visualization. He worked in AEC's Future Lab, was part of several hacklabs of BCN and co-founded ZZZINC. His media art works have been exhibited at FILE, ARCO and Ars Electronica. He organizes creative programming workshops and develops applications for Culture and Education.
In digital cartography he runs projects for several European city councils and NGOs, including the Historical Charter (MUHBA), various applications for the WWF and Hate Crimes for the OSF.

Iolanda is a Product and Graphic Designer based in Barcelona. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Elisava School of Design and Engineering in Barcelona she studied a Master’s degree in design and communication. She started her career developing exhibition and product design projects as well as collaborating with Emiliana Design Studio as a concept and product designer. Nowadays she works as an experience designer and project manager at Domestic Data Streamers.

Graduated in Industrial Design and Master in Design and Communication, she has been working for the last 10 years as art director, copywriter and creative director in different design studios and creative agencies, including CHINA Madrid and SCPF in Barcelona, working for global brands leaders such as Levi's, Schweppes, Ikea or BMW. She currently works providing strategic and creative support to Domestic Data Streamers initiatives.

Double degree in Product design and Industrial Engineering. Marta was always curious about the different approaches you could have within an experience. After watching Mr.Nobody (best film ever) she wondered what would happen if she chose to live as many lifes as she could. That led her to live her formative years from two different points of view; both from the creative and from the technical side.
For someone with such a profile, she was always too analytic for a designer and always too imaginative for a technical engineer. Also she understood that unless she developed super powers she could not live everything that she had in mind. Around that time, her path bumped into the research field where she found out she could create methodologies that lead to better and more meaningful experiences for the public.
She is currently working for Domestic Data Streamers, fighting against dull and non-engaging practices. Creating actions and evaluating them is what makes her happy (and a super-hero).

Trained at Elisava and in the Universität der Künste Berlin, she has worked in the FAD, Fostering Arts And Design, founded Colectivo Reverso, participated and led projects at European level of design and social transformation. Always works interested in the most political and ethical dimensions of design. Currently, Project Manager at Domestic Data Streamers.

Nicola is part of the research and consulting team of Domestic Data Streamers. The team is focused on the design and implementation of qualitative and quantitative methodologies applied to projects mainly in the fields of marketing and communication, with the common purpose of understanding human behaviour in relation to different kinds of business or social issues.
Before that, he worked in the design of several training projects funded by the European Social Fund, and for Barcelona based innovation consultancy. There, he had the possibility to participate in an EU funded research project related to the identification and analysis of best practices in the European SMEs ecosystem. He holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations and a Master's degree in Anthropology.

Olga Subirós is a curator of projects that take an integrative approach to 21st century culture and the far-reaching transformations of the digital age. She is also an architect expanding her expertise into creative direction, exhibition design and consultancy. She recently co-curated Big Bang Data, with José Luis de Vicente, a major exhibition of different kinds of data-driven artworks and objects that offer a critical insight into the world of big data.
Subirós recently won the international competition for the Data Square exhibition at the EPFL-ArtLab in Lausanne.

Researcher at Universitat Pompeu Fabra y Eurecat – Technology Centre of Catalonia.Pablo Aragón is a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning group in Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Since 2011 he works as a data scientist at the Digital Humanities Unit in Eurecat – Technology Centre of Catalonia, where his main activity deals with analysing and visualising Big Data from the Social Web.
His research focuses on the study of the effects of digital platforms in citizen participatory processes as well as communication dynamics and information diffusion in the context of emerging grassroot movements. Pablo is part of the Decidim team, the citizen participation platform promoted by the Barcelona City Council, actively contributing to data and research issues and co-organising the LAB Metadecidim.

Navarrese, designer and teacher, in that order. Trained as a graphic designer in Pamplona and Barcelona. Posterist by profession he is a founding member of FestadelGrafisme.org and the new TallersdelaFesta.org in Portbou, a transdisciplinary event that focuses on people and their relationship with design from a playful point of view and a cross-border condition. Teacher since 2006 specialized in Art Direction and in the development of Final Degree Projects in various schools.

Ricard Jorge is a Spanish illustrator from Barcelona. His geometric, bold and minimal illustration style follows the deco's legacy and the international style in graphic design. These artworks target solving communication needs in fields like advertising, editorial, branding illustration, website communication and infograpics.
Ricard graduated in Elisava School of Design in 2007. He has been working as a designer and lead illustrator at Heystudio. With more than 10 years of experience in illustration and graphic design, he has worked for international clients as Coca-cola, Apple, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, Paypal, Monocle, ESPN and ad agencies such as BBDO, Saatchi London, Handsome Frank, or BETC.

Toni Llàcer is a multidisciplinary researcher in Social Sciences. He holds a PhD in Sociology by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he has worked as a member of the group GSADI. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Universitat de Barcelona (Academic Excellence Award). He is professor in Elisava and consultant for several projects and institutions, like Domestic Data Streamers or the FADfest.
"To have a critical framework for understanding social research in our present world, a multidisciplinary approach is needed. Therefore, in this class, we will use contributions from fields such as philosophy, history, statistics, psychology or sociology, both speculative and applied."
